The Anniversary Dance, also known as the Longest Married Couple Dance, is a wedding tradition that celebrates marriage across generations and ultimately recognizes the couple who has been married the longest.
We start by inviting all married couples onto the dance floor, then MC our way through the years by calling out different marriage milestones along the way. Within the first 30 seconds, we ask anyone who has been married for less than 24 hours to kindly step off the dance floor. That always seems to generate a laugh from the couples on the dance floor and the guests watching, especially since the newlyweds are the first couple eliminated from the dance floor.
When choosing a song for the Anniversary Dance, we like to think about the generations that will be sharing the dance floor, which is why timeless love songs are always a great fit. If you already have a pretty good idea who the longest married couple may be, this is a great opportunity to make the moment a little more meaningful to your family. Imagine how special it could be to use Grandma and Grandpa’s first dance song, or perhaps one of their longtime favorites, to add a unique touch to the tradition.
Our list of 20 Anniversary Dance songs brings together favorites from across the decades. Even if you’re not quite sure what you’re looking for yet, you’ll have a good place to start. We’ve included a little insight with each one to help you narrow down the choices and find a song that feels right for your Anniversary Dance.

20 Timeless Anniversary Dance Songs
You’ve probably heard the saying, “They don’t make love songs like these anymore.”
There’s something uniquely special about a song that still fills a dance floor decades after it was released. These songs have been around long enough to become part of countless love stories. Some are instantly recognizable, while others may bring back memories from the years they’ve shared together. That feeling is especially fitting for the Anniversary Dance, where the last couple standing may have a love story that has lasted just as long.
1. Give It All We Got Tonight by George Strait
After years of marriage, sometimes the simplest message means the most. Slow down, enjoy the time you have together, and appreciate the person standing beside you. Even the word tonight feels fitting when it means being together on the dance floor, celebrating your wedding and sharing another dance after all these years.
2. Remember When by Alan Jackson
Young love, wedding vows, building a life together, raising a family, making it through the difficult years, and eventually growing old side by side. Remember When looks back on so many of the chapters that can fill a marriage, giving couples on the dance floor a chance to hear a little of their own story in the song.
3. By Your Side by Sade
Smooth, soulful, and beautifully understated, this song is about being there for the person you love when life gets difficult, offering comfort, and helping them find their way. For couples who have spent decades caring for each other, those words can hold a lot of meaning while they’re standing together on the dance floor.
4. Amazed by Lonestar
Some love songs don’t need a complicated message to say something meaningful. Amazed is simply about being deeply in love and feeling like it just keeps getting better. During the Anniversary Dance, that message feels especially fitting for couples who have built a life together and watched their love continue to grow.
5. Truly Madly Deeply by Savage Garden
For couples who remember when this song was everywhere, hearing it again can take them right back to when they first met, started dating, or those early years of their relationship. It’s a simple, openly romantic song about loving someone completely and wanting to be there beside them, but sometimes the memories attached to a song can mean just as much as the words themselves.
6. Because You Loved Me by Céline Dion
An instantly recognizable powerhouse ballad built around gratitude for the person who believed in you, supported you, and stood beside you through it all. For couples who see their own relationship in those words, the message can carry a lot of meaning.
7. I Cross My Heart by George Strait
Country music has a distinctive way of keeping things simple and letting the words do the heavy lifting. The lyrics are built around promises of commitment, devotion, and giving your heart to the person you love. For some couples, hearing those promises again after years of marriage can be just as meaningful as the day they were first made.
8. Look At Us by Vince Gill
Its unmistakably traditional country sound has made Look At Us a family favorite across generations and a natural choice for couples who already know exactly what it means to them. That familiarity is part of why listeners connect with its meaning throughout the years.
9. Have I Told You Lately by Rod Stewart
Warm and romantic, this song feels right at home during a dance celebrating years of marriage. Its gentle pace gives couples an easy moment to share the floor while honoring the love stories and years together represented throughout the room.
10. Unforgettable by Natalie Cole & Nat King Cole
Bringing together Natalie and her father across two generations makes this one feel right at home here. It is elegant, recognizable, and has the kind of timeless sound that works beautifully as the floor starts narrowing down to the couples with the most years together.
11. Forever and Ever, Amen by Randy Travis
One of country music’s best-known promises of love that lasts through age and change, this one feels almost tailor-made for couples who have already put a lot of years behind those words. Its upbeat country rhythm also makes it a natural two-step, giving couples who know their way around the dance floor a chance to do a little more than simply sway.
12. Through The Years by Kenny Rogers
Looking back at everything a couple has experienced together and recognizing the person who stood by their side through it all is what makes this such a natural fit for the Anniversary Dance. The song follows a love that has lasted through the years, from life’s changes to the everyday moments that helped make their relationship what it is today.
13. Endless Love by Lionel Richie & Diana Ross
Few slow-dance duets go all-in on romance quite like this one. With Lionel Richie and Diana Ross trading lines before coming together, it feels like two people singing their devotion directly to each other. Add the sweeping sound of a classic power ballad, and it gives couples a chance to slow things down and simply get lost in the song together.
14. Could I Have This Dance by Anne Murray
Some songs seem made for a first dance, and this one has been filling that role for generations. Built around the simple idea of asking the person you love to keep dancing with you for the rest of your life, it takes on a different meaning when couples return to the dance floor years after their own wedding day.
15. Wonderful Tonight by Eric Clapton
From its unmistakable opening guitar riff to its relaxed, easy slow-dance rhythm, the music feels warm and romantic from the very first note. The lyrics become a heartfelt serenade, filled with the kind of admiration and affection that can still make someone feel cherished after years together.
16. Let’s Stay Together by Al Green
Gritty, smooth, and overflowing with soul, the unmistakable opening notes set the tone before the Reverend delivers an immediate declaration of love. The chorus brings the message home with soulful backing vocals, putting years of commitment into a beautiful sentiment of devotion.
17. Your Song by Elton John
Your Song is a sweet little reminder that the most meaningful gifts in life often come in the simplest forms. A kind gesture that comes from the heart can mean so much, but ultimately, having that person in your life may be the greatest gift of all.
18. Unchained Melody by The Righteous Brothers
Few love songs can make a slow dance feel quite this romantic. The gentle melody and tender vocal gradually build into that soaring finish, giving the song an enduring sound that has held up beautifully over the years.
19. Can’t Help Falling in Love by Elvis Presley
Some of the greatest love songs are built around the simplest emotions, but few express the feeling of falling in love quite as beautifully. Elvis delivers it with an effortless tenderness, turning a simple confession of love into one of the most recognizable romantic songs ever recorded.
20. Stand By Me by Ben E. King
Through all of life’s uncertainty, the message within this song sounds like it was written for this moment. With lyrics about standing by each other when times get difficult, it closes our list with a classic built around loyalty, partnership, and the kind of commitment the longest-married couples in the room have already demonstrated.
How the Anniversary Dance Works
We start by inviting all married couples onto the dance floor. Since not everyone will be familiar with the Anniversary Dance, we give everyone a quick rundown of how it works and what to expect before we get started.
Once the music starts, the couples spend a little time dancing together before we begin working our way through the years. We first ask anyone who has been married for less than 24 hours to step off the dance floor, which means the newlyweds are usually the first ones out.
From there, we begin calling out marriage milestones and gradually increase the number of years. There isn’t a required set of milestones to follow, so the jumps can be adjusted based on how many couples are still dancing. As the dance floor gets smaller, we continue working our way through the years until only the longest married couple remains on the dance floor.
We wrap things up by asking everyone in the room to give the couple a well-deserved round of applause. Then we invite them to share a little marriage advice with the newlyweds.
Does This Mean No Bouquet Toss?
Not at all. If you’re planning a traditional bouquet toss, you can keep a second bouquet handy for the Anniversary Dance, giving you the option to include both traditions in your reception.
If you already have a pretty good idea who may be the longest married couple, you can even put a little extra thought into that second bouquet. Certain flowers are traditionally associated with different wedding anniversaries, giving you another way to make the recognition a little more personal.
And if you’d rather skip the bouquet toss altogether, that works too. The Anniversary Dance can take its place, with the longest married couple receiving the bouquet, a bottle of champagne, or another small gift at the end of the dance.
Tips for Your Wedding Anniversary Dance
1.Fifty Years Is Already Worth Celebrating.
If several couples make it to an impressive milestone like 50 years of marriage, we don’t necessarily have to keep going until only one couple is left. Reaching 50 years together is pretty incredible on its own, and sometimes it makes more sense to recognize all of the couples who have made it that far.
Nobody knows your family better than you do. Consider having a few gifts or keepsakes ready. Flowers or champagne are always options. As you’re building your guest list, you may already have a pretty good idea how many couples could reach that milestone, which makes it much easier to plan ahead.
2.Let’s Make It Special Together!
If you have something special in mind for the Anniversary Dance, keep us in the loop so we can plan accordingly. That includes a particular song you’d like us to use, flowers or champagne you’d like presented, a special gift, or any other details you’d like incorporated into the moment. Planning those details with us ahead of time helps us coordinate everything the way you envisioned it.
